2025, we celebrate the 25th birthday of geocaching in Rendsburg with the Block’n’NOK on September 20th, 2025. But that’s not all, the Kiel Canal, internationally known as the Kiel Canal, on which Rendsburg is located, is 130 years old. The Kiel Canal is a huge structure that connects the North Sea with the Baltic Sea and saves ships the detour via Skagen. On July 1, 1895, operations began on the waterway then called the “Kaiser-Wilhelm Canal”. Initially, the canal was primarily intended for warships to move quickly between the North and Baltic Seas, but civilian freighters also liked to use the shortcut. After the Second World War, the importance of the 98.26 km long waterway grew and it is now one of the busiest artificial shipping routes in the world. The canal can be navigated by ships with a maximum length of 235 meters, a width of 32.5 meters and a draft of 9.5 meters and it is really impressive when you experience the passage of seagoing ships directly on the canal. In Rendsburg, a railway high bridge, built in 1913, spans the canal and, as a special feature, a transporter bridge for pedestrians, cyclists and cars runs under the bridge.
You will notice that there is a lot to see and marvel at here, the event area is within walking distance of the canal. If you would like to find out more about the history of the Kiel Canal, we can recommend this documentary in the ARD media library.
